CATHOLIC EDUCATION

The church of St. John the Evangelist parish and school is seen from Ajo Way in Tucson, Ariz., Oct. 23. The Spanish mission-style church was constructed and dedicated in 1949. A year later, the Sisters of Charity opened the three-room school with 104 students. In 2010 the school was at the point of closing when Tucson Bishop Gerald Kicanas reached out to Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education for help. (Nancy Wiechec)
